Although, I've become semi proficient at these swaps, I'm pretty clueless as to getting my speedo to read correctly. My '72 has the 3.31 rear end, and a WC T-5 out of a Camaro. My speedo reads about 25% higher than it should. I've heard about external ratio converters that hook up to the cable, but where can I get one? Also, what does it take to change the gear inside the tranny and where can these be purchased. Thanks for any help
Very easy to change the 'drivEN' gear. Just remove the assembly that the cable plugs into(one screw). However if you are so far out that you also need to change the 'drive' gear then the T5 tail end need to be removed since the gear is on the output shaft. It might be doable in the car but likely you would have to drop the trans.
I have seen web sites that will calculate the drive and driven gears that you need but cannot seem to locate any now for the GM T5. Suggest that you do some web searches for that. This is a site for the Ford T5T5 Calc/ For example with 3.55 gears and a yellow drive gear(7 tooth) you would require a 20tooth driven gear.
Using the chart as an example...with 3.55 gears and a yellow drive gear(7 tooth) you would require a 20tooth driven gear. When you take out the spedo adapter on the side of the trans you can look inside to see the color of the drive gear. I do not know what the colors are for GM.
I forgot to mention that these web site calculators may only get you close, depending on your tire sizie you might have to play a little with different driven gears.
