Default ignition timing problem, 1981

I recently switched from an automatic to a four speed and am in the process of fine tuning (especially w/the cost of gas @ $4./gallon!)
Hayes and Chilton do not give the timing for the '81 but refer the reader to use the emmission sticker on the hood.....which I have but it is based pm having the automatic trans. It says the "basic timing" is 6 deg. BTDC. Basic? Would the timing be the same with the manual trans.? thanks in advance! jim

Jim, my 81 shop manual lists them with the same timing.....6 degrees BTDC. Did your driveshaft length measurements turn out ok?

I'm glad you answered this. I was starting to damage my brain trying to decide if the spec should stay the same because the engine was originally auto, or if it should change for the std tranny.

Yep, it even lists the Cali models as the same.

Default You do real good!

Older than dirt, I REALLY appreciate you taking the time!

Ref: the drive shaft. Turned out perfect. I installed the MANUAL driveshaft ; it was the same diameter but about 1/4" longer in length, after installing we ended up with about 1/2" to 3/4" play between the yoke and the end of the shaft....which has worked out fine.

If you recall, I put in a M20 Muncie with a larger output shaft than the automatic had, so the auto driveshaft would not have worked because it accomadated smaller u joints on BOTH ends; whereas the manual had the larger yoke (for the larger u joint) to bolt up to the yoke and the same configuration as the automatic shaft on the differential end.
If theres anything else you want to know about this experience, please do not hesitate one second to ask me.

take care and good luck., jim
