Hello,
I am not familiar with the 78 shifter. But if it is similar to my 72 automatic with the black ****, and the silver button on top, then I may be able to help.

On the 72 auto, the silver button on top needs to be unscrewed in order to unscrew the black ****. The black **** can be unscrewed, but will not be able to come off the shift lever unless the silver **** is unscrewed first.

To take the silver **** off you may need to use some additional force to unscrew it. What I did was to take some cloth rags and wrap it around the silver ****. Then I used a pair of pliers to GENTLY grip the **** and turn counter clockwise. Too much plier pressure could dent or damage the shift ****.

After the silver button is out, the black **** will unscrew all the way.
