Temperature gauge problems......

Hello!

I'm having a problem w/ the temp. gauge on my fathers car. The gauge works properly until the lights are turned on, then it pegs. I've searched all the temp. gauge threads w/o finding what I'm looking for. Can somebody point me in the right direction??

It sounds like the black ground wire for the gauge cluster is not hooked up...look there first

Sorry, I forgot to specify. It's a 79 (L82).

Definitely sounds like a ground issue somewhere. The increased load from having the lights on is doing it in. I had a GTA clone I built once that drove me crazy (poor idle, guages off by a mile, etc.) until I found and connected the tail that goes from the negative battery cable to the radiator support. Then whoala ! , everything was perfect.

In this case, I agree with big G - ground wire for the cluster.
