Default Steering knuckle reinstall question.

Do I need a washer in between the nut/steering knuckle and ball joint?

I'm ready to reinstall the steering knuckles and just thought I'd read a little Chilton's before I start bolting things on. Fig 7 and Fig 8 on pages 8-6 and 8-7 both indicate, "Washer must be replaced" in the diagrams. Fig 9 does not show any washer in the same location. When I removed the steering knuckles, there was no washer and the ball joints appeared to be original. What's the consensus?

Question #2. How much grease do I need to use when I repack the front inner and outer bearings? And how much goes around the spindle?

TIA

I don't recall using a washer and I am 99.99% sure mine were original before replacing them.
