Default do Hypertech power chips replace PROM

I recently dumped the automatic trans and put in a manual transmission in my 1981 Vett. Now I learn that the PROM in the ECM is different depending on the transmission which MAY be the reason for less MPG>.

so far, I'm having little success finding a replacement/
Does anyone know if the Hypertech Power Chips replace the PROM or are they an add-on?
I like the advertisment in the Corvette catelogues & will probably go w/one if they REPLACE the PROM.
You already know I appreciate it , don't you? Jim

I have one in my 81 and I pulled the stock prom out and replaced it with the Hyper Tek Chip.
Thats all there is to it.
My 81 is a Automatic ...
The Chip did help it.....

The chip is definately a replacement, not an add on.

Where would you add it?

It replaces the PROM. All you have to do is remove the battery, remove one screw for the access door and swap the PROM. Then reinstall cover and battery.

Thanks all! I really appreciate being able to count on you for quick answers.

In Reference to: "where else would you put it"? I've never wanted to, nor never have messed w/that computer. I'd really like to get rid of it, but not feasible due to emission laws.

I'll probably get one tomorrow at the Lowes Motor Speedway Auto Fair at Charlotte, NC. if Hypertech or one of their vendors is there...otherwise I'll order it from one of the Corvette catelogues.

You don't want to get rid of the computer, just learn about it. I have tpi in my Tran Am, with 9.3:1 compression on steel heads. It runs on 87 octane without knocking and gets 24 mpg highway on a 3600#-3800# car. It was originally a carb car, and talking to the previous owner, she had to run 91 octane and never saw better than 13.5 mpg. By the way that was on a 305, it now is getting those numbers with a 350!
