The exhaust system on my '78 L-48 4-speed Daily Driver is in need of replacement. I want to do good but am working on a tight budget. I also am in NJ and as the car is registered as a daily driver it needs to pass visual and sniffer pollution inspection. I'm planning on changing everything behind the exhaust manifolds staying with the stock X configuration. I know headers are great but the budget will not allow. What is the size of the stock pipes? How much bigger diameter will make a difference? I want to change the cat to a high flow but don't know what brands are good, any recomendations will be appreciated. Andfinally what mufflers are good at a good price? Any thoughts on FLOWTECH Raptor Turbos? Thanx in advance for any help....
An aftermarket high flow cat and some free flowing mufflers will help quite a bit and shouldnt be too expensive to do.
Thats what I have on my 78 (Calif)....cost me $585 for 2/1/2" Y thru 3" single pipe including 3" high flow cat and 2 !/2" Y out thru Dynomax Super Turbos..the resonance at 1500 rpm in 1st gear was no extra charge..
Contact Denny at Mufflex in Trenton. I don't know where you are in NJ but he builds custom exhaust. He did mine and a few others here on the forum. He does excellent work and the system fits better than any stock or aftermarket system I have seen. He will build you whatever kind of system you want. It is worth a call or a trip to his shop. Word of warning his shop is small and not impressive. Take a look at his photo album of his work.
