Default Front Sway Bar Question

Just noticed that my front sway bar bolts are loose, was wondering if they are supposed to be this way, or if they are supposed to be tight.

I have more thread showing than what you have. Also my bolt comes in from the bottom, course maybe they did your year different than my '72.

Tighten them 'till you have a little bulge on each bushing...with the weight of the vehicle on the tires..

Those look like poly bushings to me in which case they won't bulge much if at all. There should be a bit of preload on them though just to keep things tight.

Tightend up the sway bar, and much more of a solid feel going into corners, thanks again for your quick responses.

is your car lowered in the front (springs cut)?? I ask this because it looks like it's frequently riding on the bump stop...look at the recepticle dish next to the spring pocket, you can see where it contacts the frame. If it only does it on very hard bumps it may be time for some new shocks.

I have had the car for 6 months now, and I am not sure if the front springs were cut by previous owner. I see the marks on spring pocket where the bump stop is hitting. I think you are right, it might be happening when I go down my driveway (which is very long and quite bumpy). If new shocks are what the doctor recommends, is there a specific brand, firmness, oor length that I should look for.

Bilstein shocks are the way to go. You can find them on sale for around $250/set.

Just make sure they are the Sports and not the HD's.

Here are the compressiopn and rebound numbers for Bilsteins measured at .5m/sec

B36-0946 HD Front 1018N-M/Sec
1991

B46-0956 Rear 970
1580

B36-0222 Sport Front 1585
2870

B46-0232 Sport Rear 995
2795

I ran Sports for a while and I found them pretty stiff.

Ok, sounds like new shocks are on the list of things for winter projects.

Thanks Again,
