Those look like poly bushings to me in which case they won't bulge much if at all. There should be a bit of preload on them though just to keep things tight.
is your car lowered in the front (springs cut)?? I ask this because it looks like it's frequently riding on the bump stop...look at the recepticle dish next to the spring pocket, you can see where it contacts the frame. If it only does it on very hard bumps it may be time for some new shocks.

I have had the car for 6 months now, and I am not sure if the front springs were cut by previous owner. I see the marks on spring pocket where the bump stop is hitting. I think you are right, it might be happening when I go down my driveway (which is very long and quite bumpy). If new shocks are what the doctor recommends, is there a specific brand, firmness, oor length that I should look for.

Bilstein shocks are the way to go. You can find them on sale for around $250/set.
