car will not go into reverse unless I go into first....
Hi,
When I shift the car into reverse, it makes a horrible sound. Like a rumbling/clanking noise. But if I go into first before I go into revese, It goes into reverse okay.
I installed a centerforce clutch a little while back, but I never used the adjustable ball that goes on the inside of the bellhousing. I just used the stock one. It has been good so far, but I am worried that it might be the problem...
Any suggestions???
Thanks,
Joe
When your car is in Neutral and running the input shaft on the transmission is spinning with the engine.
This spins the gears inside your transmission.
When you disengage the clutch and put it into 1st or 2nd this will stop the rotation of the internal parts of the transmission.
The owners manual for your car recommends putting it into 1st or 2nd before going into reverse.

Really?
That is reassuring.
I will let it cool down and see if it still does it.
The weird thing is that I never have a problem until today.
Thanks,
Joe
Your clutch has probably seated in a bit since the install and you might need to re-adjust the pedal endplay
Is that done by the rod on the side of the engine compartment?
I had to extend taht with a piece of threaded rod to get closer to the right pedal height.
THanks,
Joe

that's because you used the stock clutch fork ball stud thingymabob! Your grinding when going direct to reverse is normal, but when you use a centerforce clutch + stock clutchfork ball stud your pedal will go to the floor before the clutch is engaged, and you have to add some lenght somewhere - on the upper rod like you did, or using a longer lower cluthrod like I did.

I was told many years ago learning standard shift cars to always engage 2nd gear first. The reverse gear is the only gear that actually moves to engage with the idler gear and it's common to find them with chipped teeth during an overhaul.

Don't know about a '68, but I put a Centerforce II clutch on my '76 383 using the stock fork and stock ball stud. No problems. Centerforce says to measure from the nose of the ball stud and if the dimension is within their specs no problem. The instructions that came with the clutch will tell you what and how to measure.

I will look at the directions and check with centerforce on Monday..
Thanks for the post...
