I have to ask the people who know all corvette answers, how hot should the power steering fluid be. I rebuilt the pump two weeks ago and today after driving for about twenty minute the hard lines into the control valve were too hot to touch. I never checked it before. Thanks in advance.
Boy, that doesn't sound right to me. I must say that the only testing that I've done is when the oil spilled out on me after a test drive, but it was ambient. Not at all hot.
Just a 20 minute ride does seem fairly short, but steering fluid temperatures can run around 200 degrees F or higher. A lot depends upon how much steering is being done, the ambient temperature, the engine rpms during most of the drive, etc.
So you aren't going to want to touch things that are 200 deg. It is rather hard to judge if your system is running too hot or not from your description.
Does your pump operate quietly? If there was a restriction in one of the power steering lines, I would expect your pump to make more than the normal amount of noise because it would be building pressure all of the time. Have you rechecked the fluid level in your pump reservoir?
I read mine with a Raytek mini IR gun...had just drove a few miles and got 158 F on pump...200 is very possible and not a problem...(anything over 140 + will be very hot to the touch, btw.)
Not sure, but think the pumps are rated above 220 F...
