Default My T5 swap update

I have some pics from my work in progress with my T5 tranny swap. Everything is mocked up now. Have the salve cylinder mounted as well. Today had a drive shaft shop shorten and balance my drive shaft. Still have to clean up the slave cylinder brkt. Don't know how to post the pics, can anyone give me some help or maybe someone could host for me. Enjoy.

Thanks
Jeff

I would also like to hear about your swap. Are you running into any problems??? If you have any concerns come a visit us. We are in Waterloo. About 45 minutes or so from you.
We cut our drive shaft to 27 inches outside of universal to outside. Need welding or something on your crossmember. Bring in along. Doug and I welcome company.

Hi Norval, would love to come visit, see your shop and how you guys are doing. I had my driveshaft welded at 26 1/4" center to center on the U-joints. Put it in last night, fits fine, this leaves me approx. 1" of slip tube travle before bottoming out on the tranny. This was recomended by the driveshaft shop.

The main problem I had was trying to locate a truck bellhousing like the one you used for your swap. Had no luck trying to locate one. I ended up using a standard bellhousing from a 4 spd car and clutch fork as well. I had to make a special brkt for the slave cylinder mounting.

I modified the original tranny mount for the 350 turbo (my car was auto) and used it for the rear tranny mount for the T5. There are some clear pics of this.

Picked up various parts along the way, mostly gahtered info from posts here on the forum. I sent Doug an e-mail with the pics I have, hopefully he can post them for me, one picture is worth a thousand words.

Thanks
Jeff

That's great Jeff. I would love for you to drop by the shop and see how Doug and I are comming along. I actually expect Doug to be test driving it on Saturday. He is a hard worker.
He would be really interested in the picture of your slave cylinder mount. He also used a standard bellhousing without the mount.
By T5 do you mean a mustang T5 or the gm version???

Hi Norval,

T5 is Mustang version, followed your original setup that you used for your car, just couldn't get the truck bell housing, had to use a standard one. E-mailed Doug, he is going to post the pics that I sent him.

Jeff it is looking really good BUT. That dreaded BUT. Trim the plates. There is lots of unused corners and material sticking out.
Come and visit Doug and I saturday and bring the adapter plate and the hydraulic clutch plate and let me trim them down into something that is more sleek. Cut out unwanted material.
You really move ahead on the project and glad to see it worked out for you.
Hopefully Doug will have his running saturday and doing a test run.
If you need any welding on the crossmember bring it along also and I would gladly mig weld it for you.

Hi Agvi,

The cost of this swap really depends on what you source out second hand and how far you want to go. If your car is auto or manual etc. My car was an automatic. Bellow is a brief summary of what I have spent so far:

Standard chevy bellhousing (swap meet) $75
Clutch pedal set from manual vette (used) $200
Flywheel from manual vette (used) $50
Flywheel resurfaced at machine shop $40
Heavy duty clutch assembly $200
Clutch slave cylinder $120
Drive shaft shortened $120
Adapter plate tranny (material) $20
Slave cylinder brkt (material) $10
New throw out brg $30
Lakewood pilot brg $30
Used clutch master cylinder $40
Used T5 tranny and shifter (swap meet) $150
Rebuild for T5 tranny $350
Hardened gear set for T5 tranny $300
Adapter for Ford T5 to chevy speedo $70

Wow!! didn't think I had that much into it. Total is approx $1805 CAD
Things add up over time

Jeff

A warning Jeff. The bearing retainer on the front of the ford T5 is slightly too long. It will run into the back of the clutch disc. Cut about an inch off, a hawksaw will do and just clean it up with a grinder or bring it to the shop for a visit and I will turn it on the lathe.

Bernie read this carefully. Cut about an inch off the front of the bearing retainer to gain disc clearance.
Doug took pictures last night but his camera is still in the shop

Thanks Norval, I have a steel brg retainer on my tranny, a little harder to cut than the stock aluminum pce. I will have to cut it. When I assembled everything it bolted up pretty easy, there was no major interference, why 1" off ?

T

The new ones are steel. A hawksaw makes short work of it.

With the correct spacer you would think that there would be no problem with the retainer; unless the flywheel sits further back on the rear of the engine than in a ford engine.
