I have an '81 automatic. I'm having some trouble with the left rear of the car. I've replaced the trailing arms and U-joints on both sides. The right side is nice and tight, but the left side still has some slop in it. Jacked up, I can grab the top/bottom of the tire and get about 1/8 inch of play. There is no side to side play. It would appear that the whole trailing arm assembly is moving and that the yoke that goes into the rear diff. is moving in/out a little. What would cause this? On one side only? Easy fix?
Dave,
I'm not an expert, but it sounds like the retainer C-clip in for the yoke is gone or broken. It'll trash your u-joints if not corrected. Good luck.
I've never taken apart the rear end of a Vette before. It looks like there's a lot of stuff that has to be removed in order to get into the pumpkin. Any pointers or directions? Should I replace the yoke also, or just check the clip. Are there thrust bearings in there that should be replaced also (I've been getting a little whine when I'm on the throttle, it goes away when I coast)?
The centre pin will come out without too much fuss on a pre-79 diff, but on the later Dana 44's I'm pretty sure you need to remove the ring gear from the diff carrier in order to give the centre pins enough clearance to slide out, so it's not quite such a simple matter if you have an 80 - on vette.

I have a 75 Corvette a rear problem I could use info for before going to a garage. The left rear wheel cants in at top. When jacked up this isn't apparent. Have new u-joints both sides. Suggestions?
