454 BB LS-5 Engine gas

just wanted to ask about which gas is the best to use for my 1970 454 BB LS-5, 87, 89, or 93 octain?

If it pings, use 93, if no ping, use 87 or 89,

is it better for the engine of that year to use a lower grade fuel? Does it perform better on lower grade or higher grade fuel?

If the engine runs fine on 87 or 89, and no pre ignition, then running a higher grade octane is a waste of $$$$$ and no benefit. You won't see any performance gains. However, if there is pre ignition, then running a higher grade is a must.

If memory serves me, the '70 LS-5 has 10.5:1 compression. If you want to run full ignition timing and make max power, you will want to run 93 octane fuel.
