Default 71 LT1, Hasn't run 5 yrs., what fuel

I hang in the C4 forum but I need the help on a friends 71 LT1. It hasn't run in 5 years. I need to get it running for him. What kind of fuel should I use? Is an octane booster required? I'm going to drain the tank to fill with fresh fuel and change the oil. I thought I might shoot some mystery oil in the cylinders before cranking. Anything else I should do? Thanks in advance.

Any premium fuel will be fine as the 71 LT1 is only 9:1 comp. I have run regular in mine and I have a stock bottom LT1 with 68cc heads (aluminum) and about 10:1 compression. No octane boost should be needed. I would pull the dist and prime the engine with oil and squirt a little oil and turn it over a few turns by hand. If everything seems OK crank it up. Drain the old fuel and use fresh fuel. The fuel has gone bad in 5 years.

Replace in line fuel filter. Check fuel bowls in the carburetor. If it's been sitting for five years, you can expect the carb to be crudded up. You may also find gunk in the fuel line from the tank to the pump. It wouldn't hurt to blow out the fuel line. Put a spare piece of hose over the engine compartment end of the line or you could have a mess on your hands.

I live about 5miles away in wallingford, let me know if you have any questions. I've been known to do some work on C3's once in a while.

Once you drain the tank and put fresh gas in it, it wouldn't hurt to throw some Chevron Techron fuel system cleaner in it.
