Hey my bearings are going bad on the A/C Delco altenator the PO put on just before I bought her. I believe it's 65amp, and yes external regulator. Any reason I can't go up to 80amp? Please advise as I want to order Saturday.

if you're going to change over. I changed my 68 over to an internally regulated 94 amp unit. If I was doing it right now; I'd actually look for one of them 140 amp Alternators.

Exactly. I bought a 135 amp unit from www.4alterstart.com and used a Summit Racing high amp wiring kit......
I put a 160a on mine. stock was 63a. My car came with power windows, locks, and A/C. I've added an MSD box, electric fuel pump and HUGE Bosch electric fan. Figured I needed the juice.
The rated output for alternators is what it is capable of delivering should the car's electrical system require it. In other words, even if the alternator is capable of putting out 100 amps, it will only put out 25 amps if that is all the electrical system is demanding. Start turning on AC and rear-defog as well mega-watt stereos and the demand increases, bringing the alternator output closer to it's rated output.
I just had my original alternator rated at 37 amps rebuilt to 80 amp specs by a local rebuilder. New armature, and field coils but same case. Outward appearance is exactly as before. I'll probably never use the additional amperage capability but the cost wasn't much more than a standard rebuild.
