You'll find these pumps in front of the driver's side front fender well. Look for the vacuum lines running along the fender from the brake booster. Get the electrical plug that goes to the pump and the rubber mounting plate.
The pump is also available new from GM. Various GM part numbers for vacuum pumps are 22062562, 22034995, 24505066, 10090521.
My father uses them on the vehicles he converts to electric power and wants to retain power brakes - they work well, but are a little noisey. The only thing he ever had problems with was the vacuum switch that turns the pump on and off, one kit had a real cheap switch and it didn't last a month. The better kit has a good switch. Joe
I'm using the SSBC electric pump on my Fairlane. Cam's too big to operate the booster. Works as advertised. I only hear the noise when the engine is off. With the engine running, the only way I know it's running is through a slight vibration. I wouldn't consider one unless your manifold vacuum is too low for the brakes. The accessory systems will do fine regardless of what level of vacuum your engine generates at idle since they draw from a vacuum reserve tank and none of the accessories takes a lot of vacuum to properly operate.
I initially had trouble with the shift mechanism of my then Doug Nash five speed. (Nash is now Richmond.)
..Anyhow, I ended up with transmission jammed in neutral and then the engine died while travelling on a two lane road. I lost my power brakes immediately and soon after the power (vacuum actuated) brakes. The road made a turn, but I was able to shunt off onto a dirt road and finally stop.
I've often thought it would be a good idea to have a vacuum pump backup for safety. Of course, it's pretty unlikely that what happened above will ever happen again, but it was a potentially dangerous situation.
summit sells one too, there's a nice kit for under $200 that will run brakes, too. joe
Hey Joe,
Was browsing Summits website for the kit you mentioned and didnt see one for under $200. Cheapest one I found was $279, did I miss something? Which one did you see?
Thx ESU.
you know, i was thinking i should have gone to the website and checked, but i didn't, i went from memory - it was the $329 kit he got:
But the $279 kit seems OK, it wasn't available when he got his. JOe
