I have only had my 74 coupe since earlier this year, and still trying to figure out all its details.
The paint and interior codes on my trim tag make sence to me, but the date code confuses me. The date code on the trim tag is "N06". I have seen that E=Dec, and I = April, and it seems that this is based on August being A. But using this system, means N = Sept, which is when the 1975s would be in production?
What am I wrong about or don't know about this?
Question 2, I have seen a few interiors with a switch on the drivers side of the console up near the bottom of the dash. Is this a factory switch, and what is it for?
If the switch is a 3position rocker switch it is for the fan in the rear window demister blower....up is low speed, middle is off,and down is high speed.....the fan operates through the little grill in the rear deck drivers side........john

Ed,
looking at my "Catalog of Corvette ID Numbers" book, I agree that iyour situation is strange. There are four possible situations:-
1. You read it wrong and it is H06, meaning March 1974.
2. The bloke making the trim plate goofed and stamped it wrongly.
3. Chevrolet decided to put a special coding on your car, and
4. There is another unknown reason.
Take your pick.
Now, if you check the last six numbers of your VIN, that will narrow the search down to the month and the approximate time during that month that yours was built. If you post that data here, someone will help you.
Now my '74 has the Trim Plate code J03, i.e. May 3rd, 1974 and mine was the 519th car built in May, when 3851 Corvettes were built. So, going by the VIN, mine was built about one seventh of the way through May. Apply this to your car and you should be able to work it out. You can get the monthly breakdowns of production from the Black Book.
Good luck!
My car does not have the rear blower, so it makes sence that i don't have that switch.
As far as the Date code goes...I looked at it a few times yesterday when I was checking it, and it looks like an N, but maybe its a strange H. I'll take a picture of it and post it here with the vin # when I get home.
An "N" code for '74 production is possible. The Corvette Black Book says a labor dispute stopped production at the end of June 1974 and resumed about Labor Day in September. "N" would indicate a Septermber 1974 build date. 1974 production continued into October with about 250 '74s being built before 1975 production began.
Ed,
If the switch is a "push-pull" type and is mounted vertically near the odometer re-set, it is the manual headlight raising switch and works off vacuum. Otherwise if it is where you described it, John Dunne was right and it is for the demister, but as you say your car does NOT have a demister, then either it HAD one that has been removed, or it is for a power radio antenna, or suchlike. Keep digging, you'll eventually get the answer.
I couldn't get a good clear picture of the tag - all turn out blurry. But I did look at it as close as I could, and even tried a clay impression, and it does seem like a "N06" (too bad it isn't H06, that's the wife's birthday)
My vin is # 1Z37J4S433907, so I think I am at the end of production, and Easy Mike's explaination seems correct.
Anyone else have a "N" date?
As far as the switch goes, i looked in the owners manual, and saw the rear window defogger option info, and that is the switch i has seen on other cars. Thanks for the info.

Thanks for the help, this forum is great!

The "rocker" style switch your referencing is the RPO C50 Rear Window Defroster (defogger switch) used from 68-76 and located on the forward portion of the driver's side console. In 77, it was moved to the dash where it remained through the end of production.
With that serial # it was built in early sept 74 after plant reopened on 2 sept 74.....last serial # produced when plant closed in june was 33257.......3994 were produced in sept 74 and 251 in oct 74....john
