Removing Smog Equipment
I want to remove all of the smog stuff on the '79 since I don't have to pass an emissions test . Since I am a newbie I was wondering what listing parts should I remove?
Air Pump?
Also, if I remove the AirPump does this mean that I cannot use my stock exhaust manifolds?
I have a new Edel. Performer Intake that will be replacing the stock Intake- using the Stock Q-Jet- new Vortec heads.

The correct answer is that removing emissions equipment is a federal crime. Now if it is for off-road use only, then you can remove the air pump, remove EGR, plug the exhaust manifolds or replace them, true dual exhaust, remove the cat etc. You may have issues tuning the stock carb with all this removed, but with an aftermarket carb it may be better.

There's no problem at all running the stock carb with emissions removed. If you upgrade exhaust to headers and free-flowing system, just bump the jetting up a couple sizes to compensate. Keep the carb stock jetted with stock exhaust system.

Hi, Just make sure that you save all the old crap to put back on when they change the law in your area. Just go to the hardware dept. and buy 8 plugs for the exhaust manifold from where you have removed the fittings/tubes that came from the a.i.r. pump. Peace,,,Craig

I just removed the air pump and injection pipes from my stock manifolds on my 77. It looks a lot better now with a lot more room to work in. A couple of the tube fittings were pretty rough to get out, so i had to bang on them a bit with a hammer..came out easy after that. All i did was get a 1/4'' pipe tap from O'reilly's.. about five bucks.. and use plugs from where my dad works(they were borrowed of course ).
I dont know about your's, but i only had to use six plugs since the passenger side manifold only had two tubes going into it. Very easy 45 min. job.

On my stock 79 L48, the first thing I did was drop the cats and put on the true duals. It's legal now in Texas for 25 year old car. BIG improvement on power. Just had new intake and holly carb put on and runs even better. All the smog stuff is off now looks better and runs great. I'm hanging on to all that stuff just in case.

Coach,
License the thing as an Antique Auto & wave goodbye to any and all inspections. Just don't drive past the same cop every day and try to claim you're on 'club business'.
