Default Diff Problems

I was under my car today and my driveshaft going into the diff seems like there is a lot of play in it. Is this normal? How much of a bear is it to fix?

There should be no play in the pinion yoke. Are you sure it's not a bad U-joint? The driveshaft will slide into the tranny BTW so be sure it's really a problem before you go into the hassle of removing the diff.

The pinion yoke has play in it, up and down. What should I do?

Open your wallet as wide as it will go and tell your mechanic you've got his boat payment covered for this month.

Default Time for a differential overhaul

Sounds like one or both of your pinion bearings are gone. If you're very lucky, you may not need gears too, but chances are you will.

Give Paul a call at http://northsidecorvette.com/ he's in MN. If you have him do the rebuild make sure he puts sealant on the pinion yoke.

Corvette Forum member gtr1999 builds a reliable differential if you want ship it to him like I did. Top notch work.

I wouldn't drive it If I were you...may ruin case if something gets in a bind.

Good luck,

Jim

If you are able to do the R & R yourself, then get yourself the GM Service Manual for your year. Take your time and remove the differential using the GM procedures. Once it is out you can send it any of the folks suggested here. If you stick with guys like GTR1999, then you have a known quantity as well as someone who does good work. I would not let your local corner mechanic work on it unless he specializes in Corvette diffs.

Doing the R & R on a differential is not technically difficult, just a dirty, knuckle busting job. Anyone with average, weekend mechanic skills can pull one of these out. Of course, once it is out, you will want to check shocks, trailing arm bearings, brakes, e brakes, etc. That is why one poster said to open your wallet. Again, the majority of this work is not usually done by the DIY kind of guy, the exception being the replacement of the shocks.

Thanks for the advice. I am going to maybe pull my diff out this weekend or next. I will be sure to post with any other problems. Just one more question, would this be a good time to buy a rear suspension rebuild kit from Ecklers as long as I am tearing it apart?

Absolutly. You have it apart why not do it then. No need to take it apart more than once.
Check out Vette Brakes products also. They give a discount to forum members
