I have the engine out of my 72 LT1 so I figured I'd take the opportunity to remove and rebuild the power steering components. I got the pump and ram out OK, but the control valve is presenting a problem. I'm using a pickle fork to try to get it off the pittman arm, but it won't budge. My question: how much force should I use. Is there a better way? I've been putting penetrating oil on the bolt for days now, but so far it hasn't moved. Any suggestions? Bigger hammer?
I used a tie rod puller. I would say it take similiar force as removing a tie rod end. I have a pickle fork, but prefer the puller. The only issuse I had was the puller should have had the jaws a tad closer together as it would slip off a little. The puller did the same thing when removing the power clynder so I welded a 1/16" on each of the jaws.
Borrow a pickle fork from Bubba and pound the hell out of it. Then you can remove your gear box & repair that as well ... because it will need new bushings.
Use a puller. Never use a pickle fork on the power steering adapter & pitman arm/ gear box. Pure Bubba.

Yeh.... I know. I was in a nasty mood. Just put a clutch in one of my Mustangs and skinned my knuckles along with a 1" cut over my left eye. Now my left eyebrow will match the scar over my right eyebrow.... which I got doing my first set of Vette rear wheel bearings. At least I'm all set for Halloween.
It just bothers me that there are so many people making more work for themselves because they get bad advice from Bubba. And Bubba keeps coming back uninvited. LOL
They're coming to take me away, ho ho, hee hee, ha ha.
To the funny farm...
