I didn't find it hard on my '77. Undo all the screws along the tops of both dash pads and gauge bezel. Remove the RS dash pad--undo the 5/16" hex head bolt on the bottom of the upper dash pad. Remove the pillar post covers. Then wiggle it out. Mind the speaker wires.

It's not entertaining...just take your time, it's a tight fit to get past the windshield pillars, even with the trim off. Angling the pad a bit side-to-side might help.

In order to remove it or install it you have to flex it in the middle so that you can clear the windshield posts.

Make sure it is warm and flexible. If it is cold it can crack the vynl. Don't ask how I know this.

Be very careful..don't drop or tweak it...as previous poster stated, best to warm it..know someone who dropped his,and it cracked...

I recall reading somewhere that the upper dash pads were installed on the assembly line before the windshield went in. I can see where the job would be a heckuva lot easier without the glass in the way.

Another worthwhile tip is to wrap the new dash pad ends with towels, so you won't scratch it during install.

It was a few years ago that I did this. Taking it out did not seem like a big deal. Putting it back I cracked the windshield. Take your time and DON'T force it.

I wonder if a lot of the upper dash assembly was done with the windshield out. It's so difficult to work on the upper dash area of Corvettes. It takes me (and others apparently) forever to work in this area. The factory must have had some way of quickly working here:i.e. installing the power brake booster mounting bolts, installing the clutch/brake petal assembly, the accelerator cable, the dash, all of the little light bulbs that go into the tach/speedo housing, etc.
