Hey all -
I got under my newly acquired '72 coupe this afternoon. So far, all numbers except the carb have matched, and I pulled out the tattered remnants of my tank sticker too.
Question: Here are the rear axle codes - they are all very clear and visible: 2 AK 11 30 68 W. This doesn't appear to follow the '72 standard based on all my numbers sources. W would make sense for the Warren plant, and if the 11 30 represents a month/day instead of the chronological day of the year, that would make sense for the Dec. '71 build date of my car. The tank sticker is a little tough to read as far as the rear axle code, but close deciphering front and back shows a 3:36 ratio. However, there is no AK code used in '72. It's definitely not an AX - very clear AK. Maybe it's a 1968 unit, but the '68' and the '2' before the AK are throwing me off here....
Any ideas what this may be from if it's not my original rear unit? Thanks -
Terry
According to the book I have 72 was available with a 3.36 rear ratio and it was a AX code.
I took the info from How To Restore and Modify Your Corvette 1968-1982 by Richard Newton.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for the response - That matches what is shown in my "Corvette ID Numbers" book, which shows both the AX and LR codes as being 3:36s, but again, it's very clearly an AK on the housing. It's hard to read but sure looks like an AX on the tank sticker. I'm guessing it's a transplanted '68 unit but was hoping someone could verify that from the stamped numbers I posted.
According to the NCRS judging guide, the production code for the 71/72 differentials are: Two letter ratio code; one letter for the axle plant;one to three numbers for the Julian date; a letter for the positraction source and a number for the shift. As you stated already, AK was not an option for 71 or 72.
I found another book that shows that AK was used for 68 and 69 327 or 350 NON-POSI rears.
