it was to isolate the radio from static interference.....i don' t
have one..........i'm not convinced its needed for the later cars....i think it probably was a carry over from the early cars....if you like the way they look then buy one.

As Bob said it was for elec. interference. It has mounts that bolt to the in take that have rubber grommets for the plug wires to pass thu, the wires are also covered by shields that run down the sides..
