Just finished getting the rebuilt tranny in yesterday, installed a new clutch fork boot and after driving today I noticed the new boot was already torn. Seemed like it was straight-forward putting it on the bell housing, but I guess I must have not done it correctly, does the little flap have to be in any special orientation? How important is having the boot installed, should I be concerned about something like a pebble popping up into the bell housing if I drive without a boot on? Thanks for any info.
The boot can only be installed in one position, the flap aft to fit into the clutch fork.
If it gets distroyed right away, the clutch fork adjustment is incorrect, probably cutting the fork in full travel. You might need to get an adjustable fork ball .
I wouldn't worry too much about not having the boot installed.
My boot just sort of hangs loose half in and half out.
I keep pushing it back to where it should sit every now and again, but keeps on half falling out .I guess the rubber must have shrunk over the years?
Shouldnt worry too much about it.
I ordered two new ones from Volunteer Vette, but that was not quick enough for me, the local Chevy Dealer had one in stock, so put it in and looks like it is holding up ok after a 30 min ride this evening. I checked the movement of the fork with the wife pushing on the clutch and it looks good with regard to not bitting the boot, thanks for the help.
