Default Ballast resistor needed?

Ok...

So, I was flipping through the MSD catalog, and I came across their coils.

I've been thinking about replacing it, since the old one on our C3 is just that: OLD. The MSD catalog had a Blaster Coil which included a ballast resistor, which stated was something I'd need to install on the stock distributor.

I thought I only needed the resistor if I was running an electronic system, like a Mallory Unilite or something similar...Anyone know?

I have a Mallory Unilite distributor with their coil also and it requires a ballast resistor. If they recommend it, then I'd install one

You have a braided wire going to the coil...same as a ballast resistor

Unless you want to keep replacing the electronic module put in the ballast risistor. That module is around 45 bucks.

Well, all I've got right now is just a points distributor, no electronic one. I was just wondering if I actually needed the ballast resistor for the points system or not.

If we upgrade to anything electronic, it'll be as part of an HEI distributor.

If your using the stock points type distributor, and the stock wiring, then you don't need a ballast resistor. You already have one installed.
Your wiring harness has a resistor wire that goes to the ignition, this takes the place of an actual ballast resistor. Your coil runs on about 8 volts and the ballast resistor, or the resistor wire is what cuts the voltage down from 12 to 8. So unless bubu cut it out.....the resistor wire is all you need.
