Check around at some of your local machine shops. I called a few around where I live and one place had a set that had been cleaned, valve job, new springs etc.....for $395
Hi, I'm building a 350 for my 79 and want to get around 350hp out of the motor.
My question is should I go w/Vortec heads or not. Any thoughts on the subject.
Thanks
There was an interesting Vortec buildup in Car Craft magazine a coupe of years ago. Using a Wheeler Motorsports 350 shortblock, a pair of Scoggin-Dickey vortec heads, 750 Edelbrock carb, Edelbrock RPM intake, LT-4 style 1.6:1 roller rockers, and a Competition Cams XE 274 bumpstick. This combo made 442 hp @ 5900rpm and 452 lb/ft @ 4400rpm using a 1 inch spacer. Lots of performance potential with Vortecs
I have vortecs in my 97 Z-71 truck and they ping like crazy if I go below 89 octane. Thinking of putting them on my 87 IROC because you can find them in junkyards for cheap.

I am thinking of Vortec heads as well. Do they work with Hooker headers? Anyone using those?
Also, what cam works best for those heads? Lift/Duration? I have stock L48 bottom end.
Exhaust ports are the same as other sbc motors, the change is to the intake side. Since sbc's breath better on the exhaust side than the intake, they make a big improvement.

Mine are in a 2002 Avalanche running 87 octane all the time - no pings at all. I do toss in 10 oz of Marvel Mystery Oil into a full tank of gas once a month. Maybe that helps.

Different motor. Avalanches have a version of the Gen III (LS) motor. Chevy just calls it a Vortec. The Vortec heads being discussed are those that bolt onto a Gen I SBC. Totally different beast.
