I bought a set of junkyard valve covers that I am trying to make work with the Vortec heads and original Q-Jet carb and air cleaner. My problem is with the hose you see coming from the valve cover to the carb. My old air cleaner has a SQUARE hole and can be seen in picture #2. I could swap the valve covers so that this hose is closer to the square hole (to breather element) but how can I make my hose connection square?
I know this might be a dumb question but do you have an aftermarket hood. That looks like a tall application for a stock hood. If you are using a stock hood you need a drop base air cleaner to clear. Just thought I'd ask.
It is not a dumb question at all because it looks tall to me too. I did some research in the archives and they say that this manifold (Professional Products) + Q-Jet + Stock Intake should fit under the stock hood so I have taken their word for it.
Some Corvette air cleaners have a plastic filter that clips in the square hole and has a round outlet. Auto parts stores should have the element and the clip.
They sell the air cleaner to breather elements with a round hose attached to it. The clip that they use looks square, or like the letter H bent in half so that it can grip and hold the element in place.
This is not a big issue. Once you see how many different variations there are you will be able to find one.
I cut and pasted this from a tune up website. It describes the same air cleaner breather filter.

Now, change the breather element. Most breather elements come in a plastic holder with a fitting that goes through the side of the air filter housing. There is a clip around the fitting on the outside. Just pull the clip off, replace the breather filter and pop the clip back on.

With that breather setup, I think that you have the PCV on the wrong side. The breather element that goes in the air cleaner will be on the vent side and the PCV valve on the other side (to the bottom of the carb).
