I have an 81 with a HEI distributer. When I bought the car the tach didn't work,,I just changed the circuit board and it still doesn't work..does this tach only work with the stock distributer? If so can I use another type board or a new tach from another year vette
Check the Tach filter first. It is hooked up to your distributor by a tan wire and is mounted on the intake manifold in the back.
This is a common problem and if the filter is either missing or bad the tach probably won't work. www.rodneydickman.com sells them for around $30.
Not sure what would make not work, in my 79 it reads way high. I verified last night that 1200 on my tach is really about 900, 2000 is really about 1200. 2000 is as high as the the tach/dwell meter I was using went to. I knew it wasn't right though, there was no way I was turning 4500 rpm on the interstate.

I bought a new board for my tach, and the board didn't work when I got it. The solder connections on the board were absolute crap -- so I ended up going over both sides with an iron and re-doing all of the solder connections -- and that solved my problem.
Also, I could be mistaken, but I thought 81's came with HEI -- isn't that stock?
