a few years ago my 700r4 lost 3rd gear. went from 2nd to neutral, sorda. i took it in to have it rebuilt and the tranny guy told me that this was a common problem with the r4's. he also said that the pump vane in the rebuild kit had more vanes, 13 maybe i don't remember, but more than the original. the explanation was that it would assist in cooling the transmission. i am thinking that all the rebuild kits are coming with the "new" pump vane.
The 82/84 early 700R4's had some reliabilty issues.In the next couple of years GM rectified this by beefing up the trans.This was more than likley one of the areas that got attention.I found this out by the guy I bought my 82CE from.He had the trans pulled and rebuilt useing the service replacements parts.He also had them put in a shift kit at the same time.I've had no problems
The 13 vane pumps reduce cavitation at high rpms. They work like a paddlewheel. More paddles = smoother flow. The aftermarket 13 vane pumps have questional durability. They are known to fracture(explode) from time to time. I have not had one of these failures, but have heard about then 2nd hand. I have since reverted back to 10 vane gm pumps in the units I assemble.

Gm used a 7 vane pump thru 86. Then they went to 10 vane. This lasted till 97 or so when gm switched to 13 vanes. The 3/4 clutchpack is a weak link from the factory. This is corrected by adding 2 more clutches on medium hp stuff(under 500) Over 500 I install blue frictions.
