Default turn signal lever replacement help needed

Ok, my 79 has tilt, tele, and no cruise control. The turn signal lever just flops all around, although it will activate the turn signals. The High beam funciton works fine. I've got the wheel off and am down to lock plate. I know on cars I've done in the past you compressed the lock plate and took the snap ring off, then you could get to the turn signal cam, but I can't see a way to get past the lock plate. My Chilton's book isn't helping me. Can anyone here give me any pointers? Thanks1

Pete

If your 79 is anything like my 77 (which I think they are the same column), there is a plastic clip that snaps off (mine broke, so don't be surprised if you need to replace this). Then you will find a c-clip that acts as a retainer for the lock plate (that is under tension). Compress the lock plate (2nd pair of hands helps) and left out the c-clip (it's held in with gravity and spring tension from the lock plate) and then release the tension from the lock plate and remove.

I have a GM manual, and the pictures showed just enough to not be helpful

All in all, it made sense after having done it.

Word of warning ...make sure you index the thing the steering wheel bolts to so it is straight -- I overlooked that and had to "tweak" that after I had it all together.

The good news is I was able to fix a "loose" lock-ring so my T/T column would stay locked and not vibrate loose. A plus, in my book -- and I'm happy I didn't break something else. I had to fix a broken wire on the washer pump switch.

Brian.

before you go into to far , it might be just the hanle loose in the turn signal unit. Or are you trying to change out the unit? Mine does the same thing but dont want to deal with the replacemnt hassle

toyvet, I read in the FAQ's something I think about what you're talking about and I think I caught the gist of it, but besides the lever being loose, the black platic on the end is also broken off, so the lever needs to be replaced anyway.

Go to www.corvettefaq.com and check out Jim Shea's papers on the t/t column. Good info and pictures.

ToyVet I stand corrected and I'm a freakin idiot! You hit the nail right on the head. Apprarently could have just pulled the old signal lever out and just replaced it. Well the column is all apart, so anyone want to chime in with things that should be done when the column is apart, please let me know

Thanks,
Pete
