Default now i have a leak

just about to get every thing done with the carb swap, and find a leak around the front of the engine at the harmonic balancer. it doesnt have enough miles to have timing chain stretch (47k miles) i wouldnt think. or i guess it might be the seal on the timing chain cover.

anyone else have this issue on their stock motor?

Timing chain would not cause a leak. Sounds like a seal failed. Is the leak from behind the vibration damper, the front of the oil pan, or between the block and timing cover? I ask only because anyone of those three places could mimic another. If there is oil all over, get some electronic cleaner and clean it off, then run it and see where the oil comes from. One other thing to check. Make sure the oil isn't leaking out the front of the head at a valve cover gasket and running down the front of the block.

i have oil on the balancer and a small drip staight down the front of the block. i put new valve cover gaskets on and there is no leak around them, that was the first thing i check cause they leaked before. i have a feeling it is the seal behind the balancer cause oil is splattered on the altenator and the a/c condenser and straight up on the hood, and i have a little oil on the timing marker

I had a similar issue before replacing my balancer. There is a seal where the balancer enters the engine and connects with the crankshaft. This seals around the snout of the balancer. Over time, the seal can cause a ridge in the balancer and leak just as you describe. The seal can also deteriorate. I'm not sure how hard the seal is to replace, but I've done the balancer change. Thakes a little time and some specialized tools, but isn't that big a deal.
