my speedo doesn't work. When I got the car the PO said the cable was disconnected from the speedo, so I reconnected it, and spun the speedo before reconnecting it and sure enough it moved. Once the cable was connected though, still no go. I disconnected the cable at the tranny, chucked it up to a drill and sure enough the speedo moved. So my question is doesn't it sound like something internal in the tranny, like maybe the speedo gear needs to be replaced? It's a 79 with a 4 spd (muncie I assume, but have'nt researched enough to know for sure) The speedo cable comes in on the passenger side. It's an L82 and I know the motor is orginal so I assume the tranny is too.
OK, I'm not going to be able to help since my 79 is an auto, not stick. But mine has a cruise control that has two cables, one going from the tranny to a little box and one from the box to the speedometer. If your's has a cruise control, then possibly one of the cables has a problem. Anyway, this reply will put your question back to the top and maybe someone else with a 79 4 spd will have an answer.
If you are turning the cable from the trans end and you see the speedo needle move to a mph and stay... then I would have to agree that it would be the speedo gear in the trans. Take out the one bolt while you are under the car testing. You will know immediately if it is a gear issue.
Sounds like the driven gear in your trans is bad. (Same setup on automatics and 4 speed). You have the cable detached at the trans already. Now remove the small bolt on the retainer where the cable screws on. Pull the piece out of the trans. The plastic gear can then be removed. Note the number of teeth, and the color of the gear. Zip Products sells them, possibly Chevy dealer also.
