Default for you 383 boys...

Recently got a '73 with a 383, Comp. cam 280 grind 468 lift, all the other neat goodies. Temp. gauge wasn't working, got it fixed, just the sender, and 'cripes', only running 160 degrees. A bit cool wouldn't you think? What temp. thermostats are you running? Also, for any who are UNDER 500 lift, I,m 468, what cfm carb you running. I'm at a bit of elevation and the 750 is a bit 'fat'.
Thanks

180 degrees, and my temp varies between 200 and 180.

Don't trust a temp gauge on a car, get someone with a temp gun and check the actual temp of the coolant. It seems unlikely to run that cold unless the engine is low compression or you have a very efficient cooling system with a low temp t-stat.

Are you using an EXACT replacement for that year of car? Where did you put the sensor? Was it same size thread and put in exact same place as origional?

Like David says, some replacement sensors are not the correct one for your year and not accurate......need exact replacement.
BTW....I use a 160 thermostat and the temp. varies between 160 and 180; also use a 3300 cfm electric fan.

I run a 180* and it registers in the 180 to 200 range.......a good place to be. As to your 750 cfm carb being "fat" you just need to tune the carb to your situation. There is no way that a 750 cfm carb is too much for a 383. I run an Edlebrock 750 on my 383 and after some adjustments, I wouldn't change to anything else! Anyway, tinkering and tuning is the fun part of this hobby, so hang in and hang on!

On my 383:

180* thermostat, 2900 cfm electric fan, .490 lift w/CC 274 cam. Stock Q-Jet rebuilt by The Carb Shop about 6 years ago.

Car runs 185-195*
