I changed the speedo cable on my '79 Turbo-Hydro and now have a trans fluid leak at the fitting. I didnt see an o-ring in there, is there supposed to be one at this point, or is it behind the gear ? How is the gear removed ? I also might have messed up the threads on the
trans end of the fitting, can this be changed ? Zip has a part listed that holds the gear...how does that attach to the trans ?
The part that holds the speedo gear in the trans, and which the cable housing sleeve screws onto, is held in by a small tab. Loosen the bolt holding the tab (7/16 wrench, I think), swivel the tab to the side and pull the part straight out. (Before this you should have unscrewed the cable sleeve). That part forms the seal for the trans fluid, not the cable sleeve. If you replace that part and its O ring gasket, slide the speedo driven gear out of the old one and back into the new one. This is all easier than it sounds here.
Very easy to do on a 4 spd, I would guess equally as easy on an auto. As stated it sounds like the O ring where the speedo gear is needs to be replaced. BTW, you mentioned Zip. I must say it's mighty nice to have them so close by that I pass by them twice a day, (to and from work!)

Sounds easy enough...I'll get back under the car tonight and pull it all apart...Thanks.
when dealing with mine, i learned that i really wished i had a 2nd elbow in my forearm...i ended up cralwing under the car from the passenger side so my arms were not over my head..made an easier angle to work from..if you have a lift, it makes it a lot easier!
All I had to do was re-tighten the fitting. It must not have been threaded on right the first time. Looked dry after sitting overnite. Thanks for the help.
