looking at replacing my front bumper the one that's on there now is in bad shape and not the original one, trying to find out which vendor out there has the best fit and quality. bushog
...because of the "curvature" of the front bumper, especially around the ends around the marker light area, sometimes it's difficult to get a bumper that "fits". I lucked out 4yrs ago with a TrueFlex front for my '75 and it fit with no alterations to the fiberglass of my car. Some minor modification may be needed to fit the front one on. I tried 3yrs ago to buy an Eckler's "Flexi-Fit" bumper for the front of my '74, but around this curvature area it wasn't even close. Ended up just selling that bumper as I already had my bodyshop paint it BEFORE I tried installing it(big mistake). Ended up putting a GM Restoration Parts "Original" Urethane bumper for $487 on the front of my '74. This is one reason why GM originally had used urethane. It's bendable, moldable & pliabe. You can make it "conform" to virtually any shape or contour line. Many people on the forum here have had to send back or do fiberglass work on their car to get these "aftermarket" bumpers to fit.
I replaced my crumbling urethane bumper with a fiberglass one from ACI. It didn't even come close to fitting the car, which has never been molested. I first ordered the TruFlex bumper but sent it back because it had a defect. As far as I'm concerned these fiberglass bumpers are terrible to fit, they don't come close. ACI wants you to remove and discard the collision cushion in the front so their poorly engineered bumper will fit!! BULL, don't do it!! Someday you might need that safety feature!
I was so darned frustrated by their stuff I wrote them a letter and even included some pictures, they never replied.
I suspect the urethane fit is much better because it's so much more flexible. Whatever you do, don't modify the car.......modify the bumper to fit the car. If you change the car, you or the next poor guy will have the additional problem of an altered car to make fit.
I replaced my urethane bumper with a glass one that was fairly close from Mid America. When you get it is says to mount and sand before painting, I'm happy with mine.
