Default Steeroids Install

I am getting ready to install a Steeroids kit in my 81 Vette and was wondering if anyone had encountered any problems with the install or with the instructions provided.

Thanks,
Don

I just heard from a Corvette shop in my local area that these aren't really suited for the street due to ground clearance problems.

I was told to talk to Jeff at VB&P for more details regarding this.

I've had Steeroids in my '69 for almost a year now. While it is closer to the ground than the stock steering, I have never had a problem. My car is on the road every day too.
The system is a huge improvement over the original steering. The only complaint that I have is about how the Steeroids changed the ackerman angles. I feel some binding in tight turns and that bugs me a little.
As far as the installation, just read the instructions and take your time. It's not a difficult job but it is time consuming. I had to do some grinding on the rear of the left engine mount bracket and lower control arm. So there was quite a bit of trial fitting and assembly before it all went together for good. My Hooker side mount headers added another wrinkle to the job but I overcame that.
Work slowly and carefully on the u-joint shaft that connects the column to the rack. I had some binding but a lot of adjusting and patience got that worked out too.
Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions.

Like Shark Pilot said.

I've had mine on for 2 years and drive the vette 10k miles a year and it works great. It did require a little adjusting of the steering ujoints to remove all binding. Another fyi is others, myself included, had a problem getting the power steering hose to slip onto the the power steering unit, seems to be a little too small. Easy fix is to drill out the hose making the inside diameter slightly larger.

I feel the ground clearance issue is bogus in that it certainly LOOKS scarey, it's only an inch or two lower than the big bar, and in fact not as lo as most all oil pans, not on my 350 anyway....so it's not an issue,...but there is a rub to that, MY install is not steeroids, and I flattened the oil pan for an extra 3/8 or so clearance to the bellows on the rack....whoopie doo...
but I hear no mention of that in a steeroids install....
course I positioned the rack and so forth a bit differantly also, just two universals on the input, and a differant center mount for the stock tie rod ends, and so i'ts higher overall than steeroids by about 1/2 inch or so...

Sounds like a place by my house that refuses to put any aftermarket parts on Vettes they work on

I've got about 100 miles on mine so far, and I'm very satified with it. The steering is so much easier now, especially at slow speeds.

It does take a little while to get the binding adjusted out of the u-joints. Initially I had some loose "clunking" that turned out to be a worn out lower bearing on the steering column...an easy fix.

I ended up aligning the car myself. Only the toe changed with the install, so I asked around and learned how to make a string perimeter around the car that I could use to align the toe-in to. It worked great and saved me the cost of an alignment.

Good luck...

Installed steeroids in my '77 about 3,000 miles ago, by far the best improvement I have done to my car. Hardest part of the setup was removing the old system. After I installed it I had to swap out the 255/60/15's for some 225/70/15's to avoid the tires from rubbing on the frame while in tight turning. Also, as mentioned, take your time and get ujoints setup so there is no binding. Also, put some loctite on all the bolts and set screws. Check the clearances of the lowest set screw and the engine horn (some have had some issues with this).

3-4K on my install and it is great! you can hold the car straight with two fingers on a badly rutted road at 70mph....just take your time the insructions are good, do you have a new lower steering column bearing to replace the old one? if not get that before you start the install and start soaking that now with penetrant
