Default Engine Temp

What should the running temp be? Mine runs 190 to 210. Doesn't seem to be overheating, no performance loss, no boil over. Mine is a 1980 L82 with a 350.

Sounds ok.the 82's were set up to run higher temps....my 78 L-82 runs 185-200....you might want to flush cooling system and hose clean rad,though...
What conditions are you seeing 210 ?

My 76 runs 195...engine runs fine, but in the summer, the cabin gets real hot...a/c doesn't work...gotta get that fixed...anybody know why it gets so hot inside? even with the tops off, at 80* weather, it's uncomfortable...really hot...but was really comfortable yesterday at 24*

My 78 has a "hot" cabin in 90 F plus weather...in contrast,my 69 BB is much better under same conditions...the difference is external heat shields on the 69 at footwells...78 does not have them, but I'll be fitting some soon...(there is also insulation between shield and footwell...)

I've tried all kinds of different products on the 78 under carpet..nothing worked...then a poster here said best way is to stop heat is on engine side....just for info,my 78 footwells read 175 F (engine side) and 120 F cabin side with my mini-temp IR gun...in 90 F weather..

So rhiwood....what have you done to cool her off...like you said it's just damned uncomfortable and of course, 90 + weather is my favorite time to run the vette..

Have not fixed the 78 yet...just bought the 69 in September and realized the difference in cabin temps with the footwell shields/insulation..

The 69 footwell shields are mounted with a 1" gap on clips.(about 12"x 12" )...then insulation was installed between shield and external footwell surface....you want insulation that will resist at least 500 degrees exhaust temp....another interesting point is these are not the 69 stock metal shields..they are some kind of card board material almost like heavy roofing material....have not figured that out yet,but I must get to Home Dump or Lowes to look at some roofing material for comparison...it is about 1/8" thick...

Here is a pic of the 69 shields....almost forgot I had this photo....

You can see the shield is not metal....when I do the 78,I'll bond the insulation to the shield so it will be a neater installation...then put it against footwell on clips...

So, let me ask you...you think the 69 shields are stock equipment?..or did someone like us get sick of the heat and just fix the problem?

Hey rhiwoods..I gotta jump off, but wanted to put this in...maybe you can advise...
You say you tried insulation inside, under the rug? I think you said it didn't work? must be something you can get...
Also...I have stock exhaust....the heat in your opinion is coming from the exhaust or the engine compartment?
I really have to address this problem...I may live in the great white north, but...summers up here get nasty hot...
Any additional help is greatly appreciated...thanks..

This is an acceptable range. My 79 355 runs mostly at 180 but use of A/C on a very hot day, I can see some 200+ temps. That said, I'm running an 180 t-stat with new rad, pump and hoses.

Mine stays centered on the "2" in "200" under normal driving, but when I drive up a small mountain range it creeps up so the needle is on the middle "0" in the number "200" . If I accelerate , I get a light knock. Sounds like shaking small gravel in a tin can. Does this sound like a carb or a timing issue? Radiator and hoses are new.

I run 200-210 with no fan and about 160-170 with the fan. The fan is a factory GM electric fan that I got at the junkyard

Metal heat shields at footwells were a factory item on 69 vettes..the previous owner installed the shields in the picture...not sure what year GM stopped this, but my 78 did not come with them..

My 76 does not have these...I have a stock exhaust...you think the heat is definately from the pipes...not coming thru the fire wall into the cabin from the engine compartment? I definately want to stop that heat before next summer...

Definately a combination of the two....but from my IR gun readings, exhaust is my main problem.....my tunnel/console and vent ducts ok...I have no A/C on the 69 and yesterday it was ok even though air temp was 85.....but the 78 cooks at footwells...120 F in 90+ weather...

Take a flashlight at night and have someone shine it inside vette at your firewall while you look from engine side...seal off any areas where you see light....then you are just left with the exhaust radiant heat....also,sometimes hot air can come thru passenger side vent at kick panel...check your vacuum actuated door there...
