Default occasional misfire

i put in new points, rotor, cap and plugs... set dwell at 30* and timing at 16*BTDC... can't seem to get rid of occasional misfire at idle... 71BB, q-jet...also got 18-20" of vacuum at idle

Park it in garage with door big door open for ventilation, turn off all lights possible and start it. Look for an arcing plug wite to header or other ground or check resistance of plug wires.

being too lean could be an issue... got it at one to one and a half out on the adjustment screws, but it also puts vac at 18-20" which i thought was the best since when tuning the carb you wanna have it set at the most vac you can get...i'll try opening it another half turn and see what that does....i'll keep you posted. thanx, ron

Well, you're right about setting carb jets for highest vacuum reading so that kinda kills the lean theory. I'm surprised some of the experts haven't chimed in yet. Lot's of good engine guys on here. What's the condition of the heads, the valves in particular? New heads or head work within last five years? If you don't have any luck soon, maybe a compression check would confirm good valve seal. I'm just throwing stuff out there now......coil? Seems like coil would worsen with higher RPM's.....plugs?.......did you use AC plugs? I've had similar issues when using Champion plugs, had to switch back to DELCO's. Some guys will laugh when they read that.....but I've heard this from a couple of riends of mine that run GM engines of older days.

thanks jim for the input. i got a lil blue smoke and did a comp test... 140-150, sqirted oil in cylinder and press. was also good. got valve seals now just waiting for decent weather as i have a carport. i always use AC r44ts... when the rain stops i'll go over it again and see how it idles.

wish I could be of more help to ya

BTW....by valve seal I meant valve to seat not the valve seal itself....sounds like the compression test dispells valve seat seal problems anyway

Make sure your not tapping PCV vacuum from the #8 port fitting, it needs to be at the bottom of the carb. baseplate or on the open part of the intake plenum. If you have any vacuum hose on the #8 intake port fitting, cap it off and see if the miss is gone. Any vacuum leak at that point will cause a mis-fire on # 8 cylinder. G/L
