Ok, so I put a post on here asking what was the matter with my wiper system. The way it was hooked up, when the car is running, the wiper door comes up without the system being on and the wipers don't work. Someone suggested replacing the wiper motor, something about an internal park switch, if it goes bad the wiper door thinks it needs to stay open. The system also runs down my battery, if I have the plug into the wiper motor it runs down the battery. So....I replaced the wiper motor, spent half of the day doing it, but it wasn't to bad. Still nothing. I hear clicks when I turn the wipers on, I hear clicks when I push the switch in for spray. But I get nothing, no spray, no wieprs, and my wiper door still comes up on startup. Where do I go next to replace something, relays?, swithes?, actuator?. Something ain't right, and it is driving me nuts. I do have one question, is it the hose on the nose side of the actuator or the firewall side that sucks? And is it supposed to have vacuum even when the wipers aren't on. Because mine does. Please help guys, I know these 68's are a pain for this kind of stuff and soemone out there has to have had this before. Thanks
ok. Fixed the problem. After reading several post on here I decided to go check my wiper override ****. Sure enough it was unplugged. So i plugged it back in and viola, wipers work. Washer pump makes noise but no fluid. So save the trouble I think I am going to replace the pump. I think it is like $30 or so. But, I still need to know why the wiper door is coming up on startup. I don't know why, and it is driving me nuts. I fiddled with it once and got it to stay down on startup. Turned on the wipers, door came up, wipers worked, but it wouldn't go down. Then it was back to the same thing, up on startup, and have to manually put it down. Please help.

I believe ButchR, had the same problems a few weeks ago. If it's not on that one, look for all posts by Butch and you may find your answer.
Sounds like you need to clean your wiper door vacuum relay located behind the tach. It is the unit that directs the vacuum to open and close the door. It gets dirty and makes the door act funny. There was a good explanation of how to take it apart and clean it on the 1971 registry web site but it is gone. In a nutshell, take it out (which is the hardest part of the job) Drill out the rivets that hold the can together and clean everything in it. There is a needle valve with two rubber seats on either end that get dirty. After cleaning and lubing everything get some 1/8-inch pop rivets and rivet it back together.
