passing gear

After swapping engines in my 81, my car seems to be stuck in passing gear. What could be keeping this automatic from working properly?It wont downshift on acceleration, and winds out on the freeway.other than this, it works perfectly.

I dont know a lot about 81's but if it is a computer controlled car the torque convertor clutch may be staying engaged. This has happened to an 82 cutlass that I had. If your transmission is computer controlled there should be a four prong connector that goes into the side of the transmission try unplugging it and driving the car.

Make sure the vacuum modulator is hooked up. A loss of vacuum will cause those symptoms. Check the kick-down cable adjustment while your at it.

make sure the cable is hooked up to the throttle linkage. If it is try to adjust it. It sounds like its to tight

Remove and inspect the governor. It may be sticking or the gear may have stripped.
