I have a 73 copue that has a leaking gas tank. I was wondering if anyone has tried using any of the gas tank sealer kits with any success? Or would I be better off just getting a new tank?
If the tank itself has a leak I would not mess with it just purchase a brand new one. A good company is quantaproducts.com
Good people to deal with. I purchased mine from them as well for my 73.
i used the por-15 kit on mine but didnt have any holes. the tech guys at por-15 can give you tips on filling the small holes with their products.
the kit is around $50. i covered the tank straps with a bicycle tube. check out my pics if you are interested. it seems to work pretty good and i feel it should prevent any damage from the straps contacting the tank.

I noticed mine had a small leak under the tank. I got under the car with a rag and wiped the gas away. I was going to try some tank sealer that I picked up. Well, after the rag, the leak got a little bigger. I crawled out from under the car and got a screwdriver to test the leak. I had a small bucket just in case. Good thing too. The screwdriver went straight into the tank and the tank emptied itself in no time. Good thing there was very little gas in the tank.
For my money I would go ahead and replace the tank rather than have to crawl under the car several times just to try and stop the leak again. My 2 cents
Here's an excuse to buy a nice racing fuel cell...
POR is good if you're trying to clean/coat the inside to prevent rust, but if you've got a leak, just replace the tank. You'll be happier in the long run.
Plus, you won't have to try to drop a relatively full tank to replace it! (Did that with a Ford Aerostar that had a crack right near the top of the tank; it wouldn't stop leaking until the car had lost 2 gallons of gas).
Yes replace it!
I (thought I) had one small hole that was leaking, so I bought a sealer kit, removed the tank and cleaned it with my Heavy-Duty Presure Washer.
After the cleaning I suddenly had more than 20 small holes and a couple of big holes.
If you just have one hole your are lucky, but you will probable have a lot of holes that you are not aware of yet.
I found all my holes under the 2" black anti-squeak pad.
The pad is acting as a sealing but if cleaned/washed the sealing effect disapears!
