Default Johnson-style flat tappet lifters

I came across an article today that mentioned the production of Johnson-style flat tappet lifters went away a few years ago... I've been around hot rodding and race engines for nearly 40 years and can't recall ever hearing them mentioned. Can anyone explain the difference between them and any other lifter... solid, mushroom, hydraulic... etc.?

The good news is that COMP Cams is now producing them... for anyone who might be concerned. They're available for Chevy V6, SB, BB as well as Pontiac and Oldsmobile V8's.

Some background ... Hylift-Johnson did make lifters for Isky, Joe Gibbs Racing, Comp etc ... not the other way 'round.

Hylift-Johnson ceased production a coupla-three years back.

Topline Automotive (ie Pro Topline heads) acquired Hylift-Johnson in about 2004 ... H-J production resumed about May 2004 with a move from Zeeland MI to Muskegon MI; purportedly using prior equipment & personnel.

Now, it appears Comp has acquired some or all of Topline ... further evidenced by fact that Pro Topline heads are now single-sourced from Comp's newly-resurrected "Racing Head Service." So ... will Comp be suppying lifters to Isky ... dunno ... but it's a helluva situation?

I've come to loath much of the corporate merger/acquisition scene. Shoots the crap outa competitive pricing. Didya know that DOVER corporation has acquired Carrillo Rods, JE - SRP pistons and WISECO pistons?

Jack... thanks for the background. Some mergers seem to benefit consumers and some are just a matter of survival.

The article however seemed to imply there was something unique about Johnson style lifters. Do you know if there was anything unique about them besides the manufacturer? I had never heard of a Johnson style lifter before and wondered how they were different than others I am familiar with.

Thanks again... GUSTO
