Are you going to pull them as an assembly? Thats the only way to do it IMO. Take the hood off and get the car as high as you can off the ground. Buy an engine hoist load leveler as this makes it a one man job. I took a piece of 1/2 plywood and cut it to fit over the radiator just to keep from poking a hole in it by accident. Other than that just be safe and remember that when you take all the weight off of the front that the back may drop if not properly supported.

Why do you want to do that? It is easier to move the car backwards than moving the hoist with a load.

Thank you, this gives me a second option to consider.

You can't tilt the engine/trans enough so the tail shaft dosen't hit the ground. At least thats what I found out removing them as an assembly. If you have a good hoist then it is not a problem moving it with a load on it.

I've pulled countless motors w/trannies with the car flat on the ground. Just have to remove the core support bolts and tilt the core forward. Never hit the pavement with the tailshaft. Installation the same way.

Ah Ha
- The way that I did it I didn't have to mess with the radiator at all. Since I just changed the core support and core itself about a year before I did not want to mess with it again. I can count the engines w/trannies I've removed if I take my shoes off but on my Vette putting it up on the stands was the best option I found. I didn't even try to do it with the car on the ground. Since I had it in the air to remove the exhaust, trans linkage, clutch etc. I just didn't see the need to put it back on the ground. As I was tilting the assembly out the tail shaft of my Muncie did just clear the floor. I am not saying that it can't be done with it on the ground I just found it easier to keep it in the air.

removing 6 bolts takes me less time then to properly jack the car and place jack stands under the frame....

Everyone has a different comfort level doing a particular task...I just don't like a motor/tranny dangling high in the air and then moving the hoist with the load moving back and forth....I preferr lifting the unit high enough to clear the front surround and then move the car backwards...this way no movement from the hoist and the load.

Default Just a thought...

Take one of your wife or girlfiends rubber gloves she uses for cleaning and put it over the tailshaft and duct tape the he11 out of it.

No mess in the driveway.

About three engines ago I invested in a Mr Gasket ( Or one of those accessory mfgs) Engine Pull Plate that bolts on in place of the carburator. It really is nice since it has three balance points. The rear one works very well with the tranny attached. No slipping chains....or loss of balance. Good Luck!

You can also just leave the yoke plugged into the transmission. Just make sure it stays in place using some wire.

Also, I'm not so sure how easy it is to move the radiator core if you have a/c. Those hoses aren't very flexible.
