Default Chemical dipping Frame

I just called a place about dipping my brothers 1984 monte frame not body and frame just frame. They said $1000. Does it seriously cost that much. who's had it done and how much did you pay for your frame to get dipped. Its not like thay have to replace 20,000 gallons of chemicals just for a frame, that wouldn't be economical. ANd if i have to have it blasted then does anyone know of a way to get inside the frame rails and i also thought i saw something about a foam to prevent the insides from rusting again? let me know any help appreciated

From what I've seen..that's about what it costs, it's the best method to clean your frame. The only one that I know of that had it done is the guy that runs a corvette sales site..was it vette finders??? The cleaning is not the only thing they do, they also neutralize the acid afterwards and spray on rust inhibitor.

It cost me $300CA to get mine dipped. I got a deal, it was usually 2 times that. He said normal costs were $2/ pound clean weight. This was around 2 1/2-3 years ago.

I got the deal because of some business contact with them previously and The fact that the frame was pretty much sandblasted when I got it to them.

If you're willing to take a 3 1/2 hour ride to the Detroit area, International Paint Stripping in Romulus, MI, will chemical dip your frame for about $150. That's what they charged me for my Vette. They have you call ahead to make an appointment and only do full sized items like car frames one day a week (I think Friday so they can have you pick up Monday). They do a terrific job!!

Make sure all non-steel items are removed from the frame since the first step is to bake it in an oven to remove the paint, grease and other crud.

I have a friend from the Canal Fulton area who has brought lots of things to IPS to have them stripped. PM me if you want their phone # or you can look it up in Yahoo yellow pages.

call john at kwik-strip in Allentown Pa. @ 610 437 7878 should cost about 450.00 which consists of a four step process. After frame is dipped and painted try spraying or pouring linseed oil into the rails for rust protection ( linseed oil does not dry ). You can also try 3-M undercoating with a flexable hose inserted into the frame rails. If Allentown Pa. is to far for you I may have the name of a company in western Pa. I will have to look for it. Let me know

yeah sure any numbers would help. So what do most people do who have it blasted? Do they just ignore the inside? Sounds like a waste.

Allenville seems a little far. though i guess i could drop it off and got to the big city for a weekend

Just had my frame dipped then ecoated for $1,300.
That price included :
Removal of the endcaps to get the loose rust particals out and prying up in between the welds to allow the chemicals to flow everywhere.
Once dipped, the endcaps were replaced and the frame was rewelded and ecoated

Probably over kill but I figured it will be a long time before I have the frame off again.

I agree about the thorough cleaning...had my frame and all the components dipped...cost me 200.00 at that time...place east side of Cleveland...I rented a U haul and loaded everything I could...though I had to neutralize the acid with Ospho, great stuff

Try Calling Gary At 814 898-3933 Penn Metal Company. I Believe They Are Near Erie Pa.

Sandblasting Only Addresses The Outside Of The Frame.
You Are Better Off Dipping Frame And Rustproffing As I Described Earlier.

The price is just sooo high. I'll have to find a lower price cause blasting just seems worthless without getting the inside. I'll try those #'s tommorow maybe. Thanks a lot guys. Where do you get linseed oil.

I had mine done in Houston for $150 I think, but it was about 8-9 years ago. After stripping they then dipped in in a zinc type neutral solution that stopped rust. I then had it powdercoated. I did not treat inside of frame other than we sprayed as much powder in there as we could..actually coated it pretty well inside.

It has held up perfct all these years. Great investment.

Be aware that any poor places on frame will be quickly turned into BAD places. It will eat quickly at any rusted areas. I left the old steering box bolts stuck through frame and it almost ate bolts in half, yet threads under nuts were perfect. Powerful stuff, but you might as well find out what's good or bad now and fix it if needed.

I was at a galvanizing plant where they galv structural steel, and asked if they do frames, they said they could but would be real heavy after galvanizing,
to acid dip the frame would cost 180 bux, and to pick it up quick before it starts to rust because you have clean metal, then you can spray whatever coating on it.
As for the inside of frame you can get the eastwood under coating kit that has those long nozzels to get into the frame.
Thats what im going to do!

Its also good to remember that "Good" does not always come with "Cheap". You usually get what you pay for.

There's a local outfit with illegal alien sandblaster ... they'll take it off trailer w/ forklift ... blast ... flip it around ... blast ... great job ... call ahead ... it's done while you wait in 20-30 minutes ... CHEAP $100.

Another local outfit has a large (whole chassis) powdercoat oven. Drop off sandblasted chassis ... they chemically wash w/etch ... then powdercoat & bake ... real nice job ... holds up real well ... usually 24hr turnaround ... REASONABLE $450.
