The seal is in the transmission end. I do not see why you would need a new converter.

Since the seal is only a piece of hardened rubber surrounded by a thin metal ring, about any good name seal should work just fine. Just remember to apply a liberal amount of lube all over the seal before reinstalling. Also clean & lube the surface of the converter that inserts thru the seal. The seals are a little tight going back in but just be patient and take your time. Last piece of advise is to be sure that the converter seats all the way back into the tranny. Most of the time, the converter will feel like it "clicks" twice before it is seated properly. Also, if you can run your fingers back behind the converter, it is probably not seated all the way in. Good luck.

Stock trans for an 81 is a TH350 with lockup converter I believe. These are notorious for leaking front seals. Probably can't get a "performance" conveter for a TH350 lockup, but I may be wrong. Pretty sure you can convert your current trans to a non-lockup configuration with a different front pump. It's been a while since I did research on these, my recollection is fuzzy. Maybe somebody with recent experience will chime in.

The reason why it may be still leaking is that there is a groove on the converter where the seal lip sits. Same thing for harmonic balancer leaks, but I know they make a thin ring that you can tap on the balancer to remove the groove. I don't know if the repair exists for converters.

Good Luck.
