I took the stock 4 spd. shifter apart to clean and lube it but I don't think that I put it back together exactly correct. I know that the linkage in correct but I don;t think that end of the shifter rod/handle is in right. Should the end of the shifter rod (the end that has the "hook") be engagaed in one of the rectangular gates? If so how do you get it in there?
In Pic #1 , in the opening, the end of the shift rod is on the left and the gates are towards the right side.

I just pulled mine (Damn noise coming from the trans). I rebuilt it about 3 years ago. I'll take some pictures if you want. The "hook" should run in the gooves. When the transmission is in neutral all the gooves are lined up. The "hook" is what pushes on the individual plates that move the shift levers.
