Default Front Rotor Problem- See Pic

What is the deal with the inside of this front rotor? I bought new ones and went to drill out the rivets and it looks as though someone already started to drill out the original rivets and gave up. Should I just keep on drilling?

Is it better to drill from the other side (outside). Any preferred methods?

Keep on drilling!

I feel your pain. I drilled mine out 2 years ago.

Good Luck, Les

If I see that hub correctly, it almost seems like the head of the rivets have been drilled out and it's just a matter of using a punch to knock out the shaft of the rivet.

Am I seeing that correctly?

Yup that correct, but wrong!!
the person that did that, did
it in reverse. You should drill the
heads off the front of the hub
and then air hammer or heavy duty
center punch with a BFH !!!
GOOD LUCK

I have started drilling one of the "dimes" on the front of the rotor- so far I am in about 1/4 inch. I tried punching with a hammer but no go. Is that dime an actual head of a rivet? If so how do you trim the heam off so that you can punch through?

When I did the rears, I just kept using a larger bit until the rivet was the same size as the hole in the rotor. Used a punch to pop them out the back. Took maybe 25 minutes a side. Definately easier from the outside of the rotor.

Good luck

I might be of help here. Center punch and drill into the rivet shaft with a 5/16 Bit. Then use a cold chisel to cut across the diameter of the "dime", a couple of good wacks and the flat will split and leave the shaft, then drive it out. If you want to get fancy, what I do to dail them in is to countersink the rotor and tap the rivet hole 3/8-24 and use socket flat heads. Then get your dial indicator and check runout. I have a spindle I can mount in a bench vise to set up the rotors off the car but it can be done on the car. You're going to have runout and you want it under .002" closer to 0 the better. I use SS shim stock to dial them in.

Drill from the outside of the rotor......for best results, use a 3/8'' titanium drill bit (get a couple of them); drill through the "dime" about 1/2" (this will get you about 1/4" into the hub); what's left of the dime should be easily popped off with a chisel (if it hasn't come off already); after all are drilled, if the rotor doesn't fall off, tap it with a hammer to persuade it; after that I use an angle grinder to cut off any excess metal to smooth around the cut holes (for easy and even seating of the new rotor.

I got them out finally. What did you do to your hub to make it look so good?

I was going to suggest you save yourself some grief and just replace the hubs. Muskegon Brake has them.

Too late!

The rotors were cleaned and etched with POR15 metal ready. Then I used POR15 Black and top coated that. These rotors were still good, not wraped and no need to turn them. I cleaned up the surface with a DA and 100 grit pad. Works great and I dialed them in at .001"
