I finally got these control arms rebuilt and ready to install, but I forgot to note which side of the control arm goes against the frame. One side is flat around the bolt holes, the other is raised. Which side mounts against the frame ?
I could have sworn that some months ago someone posted that the raised side went against the frame. I just received my AIM yesterday and the drawing does look like the flat side faces the frame.
I just started loosely assembling the front suspension on my car and now that I have the manual I see that the upper arms are on the wrong sides and the lowers have the wrong side of the shaft against the frame.
Unfortunately, No. 1 son removed the arms before I could get pictures. I did get pictures of the arms before I removed the shafts to make sure they were put back in correctly with the bushings. Lucky that I found these mistakes before I put the springs in.
So......... is it the flat side against the frame ??

I just sent an email to Van Steel to get an answer to the question. I'll post the info as soon as I receive it. I need to know the definitive answer myself before I go and reassemble my front end.
After reading the article and looking at my lower control arms I'm still not sure which way to orient the cross shaft. Mine do not look exactly like the ones in the article. Here are 2 photos - I reversed the cross bar on one side. Maybe someone who works on Vettes for a living can chime in as to which installation is correct.
Thanks. That's the way I originally installed them. I needed to know for certain before installing the springs. As you can see from the pics I also need to wipe off all the sawdust from my latest woodworking project. I really need more than a one-car garage!
Jim71Vette, if you still aren't sure how to orient the crossbars let me know and I'll take some more pics when I take of the incorrectly installed arm.
