I am getting my 78 in one week its all scheduled to pick it up and pay for it. It has been sitting for a couple of years in a barn south of Baltimore, Since it was in a Barn im hoping this rust wotn be a problem But you always gota be on the safe side.
I was just wondering what are some trouble rust spots to check on once i get this. Where on the frame and where ever else to check.
Also i seen on Trucks this magnetic thing you stick onto your frame that does somethign electronic to stop and prevent rust i forget the name but does anyone ever heard of it and knows if it works?
I'm new to the Vette world, but from what I have picked up on this site the places to check for rust is in front of the rear wheels, and the windshield frame down to the hindge pillers ending at the #2 body mounts.

Also check under carpets , floorboards rust out also. Floors behind seats. Door hinges, Tap on frame all around for rusted or weak spots. Remove the chrome trim floor plates and than front kick panals to see if rust has destroyed any off those area mentioned above. The rear of frame in front of the rear wheels where it starts to curve up and around wheel is known for accumulating water over the years. Windshield pillars are notorious for this also. You have to remove the plastic trim to get a good look underneath that area. Most vette owners would not be happy if you start to take parts off the car . In your case if it was sitting that long I would assume the owner wouldn't be too concerned about this. There will always be some rust somewhere with that age. Oh check your steel brake lines also. Mine where crudy in the rear so I replaced those. Also check the radiator support frame at the bottom. Known for rust. Look under pop up headlights with a flashlight and inspect the entire area under the front bumper.
My 76' didn't have any rust damage (thanks to the original owners great care in California), but I did find a lot of surface rust in the crevices of the rear seat mounts and body mount #4. Also on the metal supports above the steering column and the dash board. As mentioned before, rust damage of the frame is the most critical! Do you plan on removing the body?
Good luck!
pull the kick panels 2 screws. look at body mt under there(#2) you'll be able to see post of birdcage where the rockers meet the riisers.then look underneath behind the rocker moldings.look at the condition of the bird cage's rockers.. these rot out..then check the kick ups (where the horzintal frame goes up at the rear wheels.also while under there tap on frame from frt to back..my old frame had soft spots under drivers side door
The body mounts can be deceptive. Mine all looked rusty but sound until I pulled the mounts apart. The rubber mounts were hiding 2 rusted out mounts.
Try to get the car up in the air and look underneath at the rocker panels. They are above the frame under the doors. Another item that commonly rusts out is the radiator support.
If the car has been in a barn for a while there may have been critters dining on the seats, carpet and wiring. Bring a battery with you and hook it up to see if the car catches fire.
