It depends on the orientation and installation of the distributor, there is no fixed orientation so it can vary from engine to engine. With the #1 piston at TDC, install the distributor, ensuring you engage the oil pump shaft. You can rotate the distributor body 360*and the rotor doesn't rotate. Basically, you can designate any of the distibutor cap plugs to be the #1. It's common to orient the rotor and cap so that the rotor is pointing towards the #1 cylinder (roughly 11 'oclock) when it's at TDC. Some people orient it so the rotor points straight forward towards the centerline of the engine, etc. Once you decide which cap plug is #1, install the plug wires following the firing order.

The 11 o'clock position can be pretty critical on some engines in order to get proper clearance for the vacuum advance. The AIM for your year will probably have a diagram in the engine section. The problem on some engine combos is that the advance can will hit either the bracket for the ignition shielding or the manifold if not oriented properly. Other than that, the engine could care less where you make #1, so long as everything is in the correct order and advance is set properly.

Default Got it..found the problem

Thanks guys...
The distributor was OK, but would not fire up... found one of the plug wire shield grounds was touching the coil terminal and of course no fire.
